Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
