An Prediction Market User Made $436,000 on Bets Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
One account, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule presented on recently aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Market Background
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
