The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.
